Twenty-three Suggestions for succeeding

Here are some suggestions, in no particular order, for succeeding in your career:

  1. Learn as much as possible about all aspects of your job and find a niche area of expertise where you can excel.
  2. Help your coworkers and share your expertise so that they will come to you for information.
  3. Express your career interests to management.
  4. Ask for help when needed.
  5. Don't be afraid to say, "No."
  6. Be proactive in everything you do - if a process is broken, take the initiative to inform management about your solution and then fix the process.
  7. Set realistic and attainable goals for yourself and assign completion dates for your goals.
  8. Stay current in your profession and continually seek new knowledge and skills. You need to be a life-long learner.
  9. Shine during meetings! Be prepared for the meetings and ask thought-provoking questions and participate in the conversations. Don't just take up space and zone out. Get involved and offer suggestions.
  10. Share what you know with others and you will attain more respect from your peers when you don't treat knowledge as power, keeping it locked up inside of your head.
  11. Know who your competition is and keep these people close.
  12. Cultivate allies with your peers and with those in positions of power and influence.
  13. Ask for more work when needed.
  14. Pay attention to the details.
  15. If you have a plan, make sure you execute your activities according to the plan.
  16. Do not be afraid to "toot your own horn," nobody else will.
  17. Pay attention to deadlines and to what you are responsible for delivering on those dates and don't miss deadlines. If it looks like you need help to make your deadlines, do not be afraid to ask your supervisor for help and do this well in advance of the deadline. He or she will appreciate the heads-up.
  18. If you write something, even if it's an e-mail, make sure that it is grammatically correct and that there typographical errors. Use the spell checker, but also proofread because it is easy to make mistakes that the spell checker won't detect. Example: from and form. Both are words, but one may not be the word you want to use.
  19. When you speak, do it with confidence and maintain eye contact with your audience. If you can't answer a question, find out the answer and get back to the entire group with the answer.
  20. Follow-through with what you say you are going to do.
  21. Don't procrastinate.
  22. Always be positive at work and never lose your temper at work.
  23. The old saying about exercise, "No pain, no gain," holds true for success as well. There's a certain amount of pain involved in becoming successful and in staying successful.
